<image:title>I Just Have A Lot of Feelings Gallery</image:title>
<image:caption>Dear Nani (2017) is a project that addresses issues of gender performance and colonial mimicry through the family archive. The photographs included in this project are of the artist’s maternal grandmother, Rhubab Tapal. Nani is performing the act of cross-dressing by wearing several different outfits that belong to her husband. The photographs were taken on her honeymoon after the couple was newly married in Quetta and Karachi Pakistan, in 1948. The artist’s grandfather or Nana, Gulam Abbas Tapal, is the photographer and presumed director of the photo session. As Nani holds a Children’s Encyclopaedia produced for subjects of the British colonies, she is performing not only the role of man, but also, an Indian man performing the role of a British man. As Naqvi tries to understand these images she puts herself into the unanswered questions. She tries on the role of Nani as well as some of the other contributors to the images, such as the unknown children in the background. The fictional dialogue between Nani and her grand-daughter attempts to unpack some of the questions surrounding these images, while also asking the viewer to revisit their own reading.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Past and Present</image:title>
<image:caption>Past and Present is a series which draws parallel between three generations by recreating past portraits. The original portraits date back to 1947-1978, and were taken in either Patna India, Karachi Pakistan, or London England. All scenes were then recreated in studio and in my family home in Toronto. The images were then digitally scanned and placed side by side. The two scenes, when placed together, act as a mirror which allows the viewer reflect upon how each subject has been affected over time. The photos of my grandparents were taken 1947 after they were newly married, before the birth of their eight children and before the partition of India and Pakistan. My grandfather’s striking resemblance to her father is what inspired me to make this series. The similarities in appearance of these two men also draws parallel with similar themes in the lives of these two couples. Both my parents and grandparents were forced to migrate various times in their lives for the benefit of their children, in the process leaving behind many other loved ones and the lives they had created in that place. The series is a testament to the adaptability of people and questions what it is to truly call a country “home”.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Yours to Discover (2019) looks at found photographs of my family visiting popular tourist destinations in Ontario as a means of understanding and reinterpreting national ideals of culture. The images used are of my family in 1988, when they were considering the prospect of immigrating to Canada. By re-looking at these images, I consider this first trip to Canada as a kind of reconnaissance mission, in which my family came to understand what this country is like, what are it’s values, and if they could see themselves as part of it. I am specifically interested in these three sites and the way they have been staged to educate the public on Canadian ideals and values. At Niagara Falls, we witness the greatness and superior force of Canadian natural phenomena, at the CN Tower we understand new technological and architectural advancement, and at Cullen Gardens, we observe miniature examples of what is deemed to be ideal models of Canadian living and communities. I am interested in these pilgrimages as moments in which my own family sought to view and understand the best parts of what Canada has to offer, as well as how they themselves can fit into the cultural fabric of Canada.</image:caption>
